What's It All About, eh?

Cape Breton evokes deep memories and strong emotions for me as well as a deep appreciation for the beauty of my adopted island. My hopes are that you too might find the photos evocative - maybe a view you've not enjoyed before, or an 'Oh I've been there', or if from away that you may be encouraged to visit this fair isle so that you might come to love and breathe Cape Breton as I do. One word about place names that I use - some are completely local usage while others are from maps of Cape Breton that I've purchased over the years. I frequently post travel and other photos that are of interest to me - and hopefully you.

On the right hand side bar find my take on Single Malt whiskey - from how to best enjoy this noble drink to reviews (in a most non-professional manner) of ones that I have tried and liked - or not. Also musings, mine and others, on life in general.

Photographs are roughly 98%+ my own and copy-righted. For the occasional photo that is borrowed, credit is given where possible - recently I have started posting unusual net photographs that seem unique. Feel free to borrow any of my photos for non-commercial use, otherwise contact me. Starting late in 2013 I have tried to be consistent in identifying my photographs using ©smck on all out of camera photos I personally captured - (I often do minor computer changes such as 'crop' or 'shadow' etc but usually nothing major), and using
©norvellhimself on all photos that I have played around with in case it might not be obvious. Lately I have dropped the ©smck and have watermarked them with the blog name.

COMMENTS are appreciated as feedback is the driving energy of blogging - And if you like this site please pass it along to a friend. Thanks!

Mrs. Cardinal Warming Eggs

18 July 2013
I posted previously about the second batch of eggs and how I was not going to pry this time around - but this was a 'from-a-distance' shot.

There - You and I

There - as quiet water, smooth and liquid water
There - like a white swollen August moon
There - where human eye rarely roams
There - created to create another
You and I and life and universe exist in glorious exultation of being.

re-post of said date - I was searching through to see just what photos I had or had not posted previously as I know that I sometimes choose one that I entered before, and this caught my eye, I still like it and it was so extemporaneous at the time

Road-side In Newfoundland

July 2013

I plan on entering a descriptive paragraph or two to give you some feel for what you are seeing and how it effected me to see this and similar scenes that were miles from any sign of habitation - a way of living that is not familiar to our crowded streets and cities teeming with the brew of life.

Bumblebees Condo

15 July 2013
Around the 9th and 10th July I posted the battered bumblebee nest - but other than the photos I didn't interfere with their lives immediately.  However as the day was coming to a close the weather forecast was torrential rains so I tried to think of something quick that would not get me stung but would get the bees and the larva out of the weather.  When I carried the coffee can and the old metal toy truck down something had already broken the nesting material into two halves.  Using an ash shuttle I scooped up the best half and slid it into the coffee can.  They were buzzing madly even though it was coming dusk so I left them as shown above and didn't return for a day or so.  When I gently shook the can I could hear the buzzzz and saw a bee or two wandering about at the back (bottom?) of the can - so yes the make-shift arrangement had saved their chitin.

James

12 July 2013
With Cats, some say, one rule is true:
Don’t speak till you are spoken to.
Myself, I do not hold with that —
I say, you should ad-dress a Cat.
But always keep in mind that he
Resents familiarity.
I bow, and taking off my hat,
Ad-dress him in this form: O Cat!
But if he is the Cat next door,
Whom I have often met before
(He comes to see me in my flat)
I greet him with an oopsa Cat!
I think I've heard them call him James —
But we've not got so far as names.”

This Weeks Visiting Countries

I am listing the countries perusing this blog in the last seven days - by order of number of 'hits' - the way that 'BlogSpot' lists this information suggests that it is possible that there are more countries than shown for they always list only ten.  As always I am pleased that I get browsers from outside the United States.  This present visitor summary seems to be from Europe and North America.  I hope that those sometime browsers from South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Pacific areas come again.  Thank You, Himself!

Cardinal Nest With Eggs Redux

Walking on the side lawn this a.m. and heard a bird give that hurried-rustle noise in the lilac bush - so I peeked in at the old Cardinal nest and lo there were three new eggs - Cardinal eggs. I read once that raptors will re-use old nests but I was almost certain that other birds did not even though it makes sense as a minimal energy output.  Well now I know they do - no pictures this time - let them nest in peace.

Breakdown Bumblebees - II

Breakdown Bumblebees

Walking in the woods in the morning a downed tree-limb caught my eye and especially the small heap of nesting-like material with Bumblebees doing seemingly random motions into the material. On closer inspection I realized that a dead limb made heavy by the incessant rain of the last few days had fallen, tumbling their nursery of this years crop of new bees out onto the path.  I had inadvertently left my camera at the house so back I went to retrieve it.  Perhaps it had only happened moments before I saw it first for the bees seemed to ignore me completely at the time - I even gently pried into the duff material with a stick which exposed the bee-to-be larva casings and they seemed to ignore me.  When I returned with my camera to take photos some still ignored me but one or two (sentinels?) of the plucky little buggers came after me giving me a good smart on my back as I turned in retreat.  First time I've ever had one of the usually peaceful Bumblebees sting me - can't say I can blame them, first their home suffers an 'act of God' and then this lumbering thing comes along poking a camera into their affairs.

08 July 2013
This is the shell-like husk of the underground life cycle of the Cicada that is left behind when the cicada emerges after 13 to 17 years from living in burrows underground.
