Common Clearwing Moth - Hemaris thysbe


Common clearwing moths (Hemaris thysbe) are both beautiful and bird-like, but despite all appearances to the contrary, they are bugs. These unusual moths are about 1.5 inches long, and they can be found in gardens and nectar-bearing bushes from central and eastern USA, all the way up to Alaska!

Frontal view - the only other similar bird is the Western Bluebird which has no coloration on its gray breast - so even though the Blue-gray supposedly inhabits the tree tops mostly and this guy was only about three feet above ground lever, I have to stick with my Title identification.

It was Mr. Bodett, in fact, who coined the budget-priced chain's enduring tagline, "We'll leave the light on for you," while ad-libbing in the studio in 1986 with the chain's ad ageny, Richards Group.
