What's It All About, eh?

Cape Breton evokes deep memories and strong emotions for me as well as a deep appreciation for the beauty of my adopted island. My hopes are that you too might find the photos evocative - maybe a view you've not enjoyed before, or an 'Oh I've been there', or if from away that you may be encouraged to visit this fair isle so that you might come to love and breathe Cape Breton as I do. One word about place names that I use - some are completely local usage while others are from maps of Cape Breton that I've purchased over the years. I frequently post travel and other photos that are of interest to me - and hopefully you.

On the right hand side bar find my take on Single Malt whiskey - from how to best enjoy this noble drink to reviews (in a most non-professional manner) of ones that I have tried and liked - or not. Also musings, mine and others, on life in general.

Photographs are roughly 98%+ my own and copy-righted. For the occasional photo that is borrowed, credit is given where possible - recently I have started posting unusual net photographs that seem unique. Feel free to borrow any of my photos for non-commercial use, otherwise contact me. Starting late in 2013 I have tried to be consistent in identifying my photographs using ©smck on all out of camera photos I personally captured - (I often do minor computer changes such as 'crop' or 'shadow' etc but usually nothing major), and using
©norvellhimself on all photos that I have played around with in case it might not be obvious. Lately I have dropped the ©smck and have watermarked them with the blog name.

COMMENTS are appreciated as feedback is the driving energy of blogging - And if you like this site please pass it along to a friend. Thanks!

Chucklings

I had driven into the electrical sub-station area to check on eagles or/and osprey that might be seen perched on the electrical line poles when I caught a quick glimpse of a fully grown Groundhog - see link to get information about numerous names etc - which quickly dove for cover but the young, sometimes called 'chucklings' were not as timid - and one of which is near the front of the dark power pole along old route 7

White Blue Heron??

I am still trying to determine if this is just a very pale, or perhaps an albino, Great Blue Heron or a different but similar bird. So first I am checking out definitions from the internet, to wit:

Defining a species
A species is often defined as a group of individuals that actually or potentially interbreed in nature. In this sense, a species is the biggest gene pool possible under natural conditions.
For example, these happy face spiders look different, but since they can interbreed, they are considered the same species: Theridion grallator.
happy face spiders
That definition of a species might seem cut and dried, but it is not — in nature, there are lots of places where it is difficult to apply this definition. For example, many bacteria reproduce mainly asexually. The bacterium shown at right is reproducing asexually, by binary fission. The definition of a species as a group of interbreeding individuals cannot be easily applied to organisms that reproduce only or mainly asexually. Also, many plants, and some animals, form hybrids in nature. Hooded crows and carrion crows look different, and largely mate within their own groups — but in some areas, they hybridize. Should they be considered the same species or separate species?

Maybe? - hope to see him gone when I go by later

this was an earthen mud scrapping from a recent mowing along the verge where I place the little guy (a little larger than my hand) and he is headed down hill and into the scrub thicket along the side

Maybe?

you can see the bloody crack damage in the top photo - but looking head on he/she seems to be peering alertly out at me - good luck

Maybe?

spotted this turtle on the very edge of the main roadway as I was bicycling in late morning - and was already to late to same him from harm as you can see in the lower 'cropped' view - scrapes, and squshing (sic) are quite evident, but he or she seemed still alive so I carried it across the road and said a silent 'God speed' as I set it onto the earthen verge
