There are several varieties of Joe Pye and I am not certain which this is but until I stand corrected I would opt for the Spotted Joe Pye Weed, Eupatorium maculatum, as the purple stems are supposedly descriptive of the Spotted variety. " - but stems deep purple or purple spotted ... wet thickets, meadows Canada and south . . ." re: Petterson/McKenny's A Field Guide to Wildflowers and certainly in lo-water this would be a wet thicket.
