"Uncommon and local; a wary bird of extensive deciduous or mixed forests", A Guide to Field Identification BIRDS of North America.
I feel that the 'wary' is still quite descriptive but with the burgeoning housing developments on the eastern seaboard of United States I personally believe that the Pileated is adapting to living in smaller forests and around houses that have surrounding woodlands of four to five acres and more.
The Pileated is often observed in our woods and around the house but this wary bird is hard to photograph. These photos were taken just now through the window in our living room. I was hoping to get clearer more defined pictures by going outside very carefully. But he, very carefully, flew away giving that raucous startled chicken squawk that identifies him even when he isn't seen.
