Single Malts - and other odd Musings

The fence in this photo surrounding some of the found Viking structure sites and reconstructions is not a reconstructed part of the original settlement which had no surrounding fence.  Their primitive structures were low and grassy roofed so that from ships out to sea they were not visible.  Only their own ships would know where to look  -  but if they had such fences as we see here now, the settlement would have been very visible increasing the risk of attack and sacking.  Today the fence serves as a structure to keep wandering sheep, cows, and moose away from the carefully tended sites and reconstructions - although it purposely is designed to blend in with the reconstructions rather than having a modern type barrier.
