Common Merganser Traits

As part of the group of nine mergansers glide by - all females as the Common Merganser males tend to gather in separate flocks - I notice two of the birds have strange dark eye markings.

This cropped photo from above more clearly shows the dark markings - so far I have not found any information about this.
