Looking at my summer photographs I have to guess, from surrounding photos, that this is the growth of the wild rose on the bank that drops down to the marshy heath to the side of the house. Whether Rosa rugosa or not, it leaves behind a great fruity 'hip' which is good to eat if done carefully .
