Hooded Merganser, Lophodytes cucullatus
uncommon, in wooded lakes and streams
my own observation over about four years now is that the Hoody shows up in our area around mid-February to mid-March as they migrate from south to north this time of year
this photograph shows the female (reddish crested head with dull dark body) with a male on either side - these are extremely wary and are gone in a flash if they sense you in any way - they often dive hunting under water and come back to the surface great distances from where they dove under
one of my favorite water fowl
