Since I split wood with a nice maul rather than with a motorized wood-splitter, I usually cut out the bigger branchings - sometimes called 'Dutchman's Breeches - because they can be a pain to wale away on with the maul. They do get hauled home eventually and a few I even squander some 'working-out' time on but most are saved to either go into someones fireplace or to be used in one of our semi-ritual campfires when the kids are home.
