growing on the side of a standing dead pine - there are hundreds of slime molds in North America so it is possible that I am a bit off on my heading but it is close - read up on these (slime molds in general) "Dr Jkylls and Mr Hydes of the plant world" that can change completely in appearance and move in an amobalike way.
